Tips for Keeping Your Blog Up to Date

24 May 2022

If you want to build lasting trust with your audience (and remain relevant to the conversations they are having) keeping your blog up to date is essential. If users discover that the majority of posts on your website are old, they’ll worry that the information they’re getting isn’t current and wonder why you're failing to update your posts regularly.

Unfortunately, keeping your blog up to date can be a challenging task. In many cases, you have a mountain of content already posted that you need to keep fresh. It’s not always easy.

In this post, we provide some helpful content tips that help you keep your content relevant and current. Check out our advice below:

Keep A Stack Of Ideas To Hand

When running a blog, it’s a good idea to keep a stack of blog title ideas to hand, just in case you need to write new material at short notice. The best approach is to write down ideas as soon as you have them so you don’t forget them. Developing a coding system that lets you determine whether you’ve had the idea before also helps to avoid duplicate content. For instance, you might want to arrange blog titles by topic or colour code them.

While Google won’t necessarily punish you in search rankings for producing two blogs on the same topic, it is often a waste of time and may cannibalise visitors to the original blog. In most cases, simply updating and reposting the original blog is the best option.

Create A Content Calendar

Many businesses have plenty of content ideas, but they never get around to actually publishing. Other tasks always seem to get in the way.

The trick here is to prioritise content creation by using a content calendar. You can think of these as schedules that set out precisely what you’ll write and when. For instance, you might set aside Tuesday afternoons for blog writing, producing three blogs that you will publish each week.

In some cases, you’ll want to make your content calendar flexible. For instance, you may need to write material related to a new product launch or event in the news. Having a calendar ensures that you maintain a strict schedule while also providing flexibility for content creation relating to specific events.

Edit Your Former Posts

Previous posts you’ve written are a fantastic resource. Five- or ten-year-old blogs often have plenty of good writing and original information. All you need to do is edit them so that they are up to date for the current year and then republish them. This approach can save you a considerable amount of time while also offering customers a lot of value.

Promote Your Content Regularly

Lastly, while publishing content is important, it is also critical to promote it as well. You can do this by:

● Posting links to your articles on Twitter, Instagram and Facebook

● Writing content as LinkedIn entries

● Internally linking from existing web pages on your site

● Providing content to customers via email marketing
